Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemetery regulations require prior written approval before any mausoleum can be installed. The approval process involves submitting architectural drawings, material specifications, and structural documentation. Siting requirements — where within the cemetery the structure can be placed, and what orientation it must assume — are determined by the cemetery's institutional rules and, in some cases, by municipal review. Mausoleum Price Pros manages the full approval process at every cemetery we work with across New Jersey.

Foundation Requirements

Mausoleum foundations in New Jersey must extend below the 36-inch frost line to prevent seasonal heaving. For walk-in mausoleums with substantial granite wall mass and capping weight, foundation dimensions are calculated from structural engineering principles, not from a standard template. Our team conducts a site assessment at each cemetery to account for soil bearing capacity, drainage conditions, and the load characteristics of the specific design.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-affiliated cemeteries in New Jersey — Catholic, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, and others — carry institutional requirements that affect what a mausoleum can look like: required or restricted symbols, height limitations, and inscription conventions specific to the denomination. Mausoleum Price Pros has worked with religious cemeteries across all 14 NJ counties for generations and incorporates these requirements into every design from the first drawing.

Mausoleum Pricing

Several interdependent factors shape the scope of a mausoleum project. The first is the type of structure. Walk-in mausoleums — those with interior space large enough to enter — require more granite, a larger foundation, and more complex structural engineering than lawn-crypt mausoleums, which sit lower to the ground and are sealed without an entryway. Walk-in designs typically accommodate two to six or more individuals and carry more architectural presence in the cemetery landscape. Lawn-crypt designs are suited to cemetery sections with height restrictions or to families who prefer a more restrained profile. The second factor is capacity — the number of interment spaces. A single crypt requires far less material and labor than a four- or six-crypt structure. The third is material: granite and marble carry different cost profiles and different performance characteristics in New Jersey's climate. The fourth is the degree of hand-carving and ornamentation — from a simply lettered facade to a structure with carved portraiture, architectural columns, and decorative pediment elements. The fifth is bronze work: door hardware, vase holders, and plaque elements. The sixth is the specific cemetery's siting and permitting requirements, which vary by institution and by county. Mausoleum Price Pros provides detailed written consultations that walk families through each of these factors before any commitment is made.

Granite, Marble Options

Granite and marble each have a place in mausoleum construction, and the choice between them involves trade-offs worth understanding. Granite — particularly American-made gray granite and its many color variants — is the dominant material for private mausoleums in New Jersey. Its density and crystalline structure resist freeze-thaw cycling without surface deterioration, and it holds hand-carved lettering with precision across generations. The range of granite options — domestic gray, absolute black, Balmoral red, blue pearl, and others — gives families genuine design latitude within a proven material. Marble carries a classical aesthetic that some families strongly prefer, particularly for structures intended to evoke European memorial traditions. Its softer surface takes carved detail with a warmth that granite does not quite replicate. However, marble requires more attentive maintenance in New Jersey's climate, as freeze-thaw cycling can, over decades, affect the sharpness of carved surfaces. For families who choose marble, Mausoleum Price Pros discusses maintenance expectations honestly so the choice is made with full awareness. Both materials are available; the appropriate choice depends on the family's aesthetic preferences, the cemetery setting, and the family's long-term maintenance considerations.

Custom Design Process

The design process at Mausoleum Price Pros is specific to every project. Our team meets with families to understand the cemetery lot's dimensions, the structure type — walk-in or lawn-crypt — the material direction, and the visual and personal qualities the family wants the mausoleum to carry. From that conversation, we develop architectural drawings showing the structure from multiple angles, with detailed material and finish specifications. For families who want to see the finished mausoleum in context before committing to the design, we can produce rendered visualizations. Once the design is approved by the family and authorized by the cemetery, fabrication begins at our Morris County, NJ workshop, where artisans hand-carve all elements in American-made stone. Full design, engineering, and installation services are included in every engagement.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Every mausoleum project at Mausoleum Price Pros follows a six-stage process. First: the family visits our Morris County showroom in Madison, NJ, and meets with our design team to discuss the project. Second: we develop architectural drawings specific to this project — the structure type, the material, the crypt configuration, and all design details. Third: we submit the design to the cemetery for approval, managing documentation and correspondence through to written authorization; cemetery siting requirements are confirmed at this stage and incorporated into the final design if adjustments are needed. Fourth: our workshop artisans cut and hand-carve the granite or marble components at our Morris County bench, working American-made stone to the approved design with hand tools. Fifth: finishing work is applied, bronze elements are fitted, and the completed structure is inspected before transport. Sixth: our crew delivers and installs the mausoleum at the cemetery, completing the engineered foundation and leaving the lot ready. Our team is available throughout in English, Russian, and Polish.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a mausoleums?

Most private mausoleum projects take between four and nine months from initial consultation to installation, depending on the type of structure, the materials selected, and the pace of cemetery approval. Walk-in mausoleums with substantial carved ornamentation take longer than simpler lawn-crypt designs. We establish a realistic schedule at the start of every engagement.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Mausoleum Price Pros serves all 14 New Jersey counties, with cemetery siting assessments and permit management at each location. Our installation teams work throughout Morris, Bergen, Essex, and every other county in the state.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Every mausoleum we design is engineered to meet the structural requirements of the specific cemetery. We obtain written approval before any fabrication begins, and our foundation work meets New Jersey's frost-depth requirements at every site.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Photographs, drawings, architectural references, and images from other memorials are all useful starting points for the design process. Our artisans are experienced in translating personal imagery into carved stone — portraits, religious symbols, nature motifs, and architectural details can all be incorporated.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Military branch insignia carved in granite, VA-compliant bronze plaques, and inscription formats that honor service alongside personal information are standard elements in our design scope and can be incorporated into any mausoleum we build.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
